Evaluation of my Music Magazine NRM

Evaluation
1)In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
For the main task I had to design a music magazine which used all the media conventions for a magazine. I designed a Front Cover, a Contents Page and a Double Page Spread. I decided to called my music magazine NRM (New Rock Music).

The Front Cover
The front cover follows the conventions of a real music magazine. My music magazine is called NRM which is an abbreviation for New Rock Music.
The conventions of a magazine is the Masthead, the Strapline, plugs, Headline, Inside Contents, Barcode and Date.
The Masthead
One of the conventions of a magazine is a Masthead. The masthead for my music magazine is NRM which is an abbreviation for New Rock Music. The inspiration for this masthead came from the music magazine NME, however, I did not copy the magazine. I used NME has a template. Each letter of the masthead connotes something to do with rock music. New which connotes what the magazine is which is New music. Rock which connotates what the genre of this magazine is, and Music connotes what it is representing which is the music.
I designed the masthead on Word Art and put it in the font style of Insomnia. The masthead fontstyle connotates that this magazine is full of loud new and up and coming rock bands which will blow your mind away . So the reader knows what each of the letters of the magazine stands for I put them in bold , the black is meant to connote a warning. The letters NRM in the masthead are chunky so they can be noticed by the reader.

Strapline
On real magazines another media convention used is a Strapline. The Strapline to this magazine is WELCOME TO A NEW WORLD OF ROCK MUSIC. The Strapline is meant to also represent the magazine and give a clue to what the magazine is about which is New Rock Music. It is meant to invite the reader to read the music magazine. It denotates a Strapline which is in bold white and black writing in the font style of Impact, which makes it stand out from the photograph. It is in capital letters so it can be noticed. It connotes that this magazine is giving an entrance into the new rock music world and gives you the knowledge into the latest news and the latest bands.

Plugs
On all magazines there are plugs which advertise what else is with the magazine such as competitions and freebies, they are usually in bright colors, however, this is different for my music magazine. As my music magazine is a rock music magazine the plugs are in a dark colors because dark colors such as Black connotate dark rock music and heavy metal music. At the top of the front cover is a plug which advertises the fact that BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE IS LOOKING FOR A NEW ROCK BAND TO TOUR WITH THEM. This would interest new rock music bands which are not yet established, and by my music magazine advertising this chance it would catch new bands which have not been established attention, and they would buy the magazine. I chose Bullet for my Valentine because they are a rock and heavy metal band and have a large fan base, and fans of Bullet for my Valentine would also buy my music magazine because it has their favorite band included. The font is in the font style of Impact and is White so it stands out from the Black Background. The second plug is at the bottom front cover again it is in Black. This plug is advertising what is free with the magazine which is POSTERS OF THE LATEST BANDS! THE LATEST NEWS. This would attract the readers because they get free posters of bands free of charge, a sort of freebie to say thanks for buying the magazine. Again it is in the font style of Impact and is in white so it stands out from the Black background.

Headline
All magazines have their double page spread stars on the front cover with the headline, this enables them to advertise the double page spread and create an interest. My music magazine NRM advertise the double page stars Sweet and Sour as they are being interviewed. The headline is ROCK ALERT! SWEET AND SOUR! This is so the band is noticed. The start of the headline ROCK ALERT is in red, which connotates an emergency, that this magazine should be bought immediately because this band is hot and new. The second part of the headline SWEET AND SOUR! is in a maroon color so it can be seen by the reader. The maroon is meant to connote rock music because maroon is also a rock color.

Inside Contents
All magazines have other images of what is in the magazine. The photographs represent what the magazine contains and the stories and interviews in the magazine. This is the same for my music magazine NRM. The inside contents for NRM is in Black and Grey Box towards the bottom of the page. I wanted the photographs to stand out. In the photographs the clothes they are wearing connotate rock. The writing is in the font style Frakturika the text looks like it has been stamped onto the page. The photographs of the inside contents like other magazines is smaller, the images are smaller because the interviews are not as long. But both the bands connotate rock music.

Barcode
The Barcode is in the maroon box as well and is quite big so it can be seen. Al magazines have the barcode, so my magazine had to have it to.

Price and Date
The price is underneath the date in white so it can be seen by the reader. The price is also in white so it stands out from the maroon background.

Contents Page
The main conventions for the contents page is the masthead, the strapline, the page number and photographs of the bands or artists being interviewed
The background for my contents page is an actual color, after looking at other rock magazines like Kerrang! and NME don’t use color, they just use White. But I wanted my magazine to be different. So again I thought of the colors which connotate rock. So as you can see on my contents page I have used Black, as the bands in my magazine are dark rock bands. But I did have to think carefully about the colors of the texts.

Masthead
The masthead on this page is Contents. This is in bright Yellow, again this is meant to be in bright yellow which connotates an alarm, like people should be aware of what is on this page. I put the masthead on the Black background and then outlined the box in purple so it stood out more. It is like a sign which lets the audience know what this particular page is going to be about. The letters are in capital letters and are in the font style LifeCraft because this connotates that this magazine is rock solid and full of news about the rock world.

Strapline
I decided upon a strapline for my contents page. After studying other rock magazines I noticed how straplines were used so I decided to make my own up a lot of the straplines used in magazine were lyrics from songs or quotations made up so i decided to create my own strapline . " Rock News. Rock the World. Rock music is not a hobby its life." This strapline is connotates how rock music is such an important part of musicians lives who are in rock bands. The strapline is in the font style of Tahoma but is in capital letters, this is meant to connotate that this magazine is full of extras and the strapline makes the rock music sound important. The strapline tries to get the reader thinking about the magazine and what it has on offer.

Inside Contents
To show what else is in the magazine there is images of the other bands which is in the magazine. There is photographs of the different bands: Sweet and Sour, The Nutters, The Hoodies, and Sister Act. On each of these images the name of the pictured band is in bright red. Red connotates an emergency, and something to be alert of. The red text catches the readers attention and makes them alert of the bands and their interviews. The page numbers are on the images so they are noticed. By giving the page numbers it will make it easier to negotiate to that particular page but the page numbers are again in red which connotates alertness. The red numbers are on a Grey background which makes it stand out to the reader’s eye. The page numbers were put onto a Grey background, the Grey connotates rock music and the actual object rock.

The Double Page Spread
Double Page spreads in all magazines differ in many ways. I tried to make mine different from other double page spreads. But one thing all the double page spreads have in common is it is the star the band or artists on the front cover which is being interviewed. It depends on the genre of the magazine from fashion to music which changes the layout on the front.
My double Page spread is on the band Sweet and Sour. Sweet and Sour are a made up band but i still attempted to make the double page spread professional. On all double page spreads there is the headline, the interview, the photographs and the quotation. The interview has to do the band justice as it is important because the interview portrays what the band is like.
My double page spread is on a dark black background because I have continued to stay with black which connotates rock and also represents the genre of music for Sweet and Sour. I wanted the background to be dark and different to other double page spreads.

Headline
The headline is important to the double page spread because it gives a clue to what the article is going to be about. My headline is just plain and simple, which is the name of the band. “Sweet and Sour”. This is in the font style of Vts Revolt. This font style stands out from the background; it looks like it is on fire, with lighting bolts. The fire is meant to connotate this new band is on fire and they are the next big thing which is going to hit the rock charts. The lighting bolts connotate that this band is electric and is going to be the next big thing, the lighting bolts is meant to catch the reader’s eye. The headline is in Grey and white which brightens up the article as these are the brightest colors on the article.

Photographs
There are 3 different photographs of Sweet and Sour. These are all photographs took by me. The three photographs I took i attempted the photographs look like snapshots, this made the photographs look individual and different to other interviews. The photographs are on a white box so they look like real life photographs. But as this is a new band I didn’t want it to look too professional as they are up and coming and I wanted the snapshots to look a bit unprofessional as if they were took by the band themselves then put onto the double page spread. The photographs were meant to show the different sides of Sweet and Sour; The Sweet side, The naughty side and the sister side. The first photograph is meant to connotate the sweet side of the band as their personalities can be sweet. The second photograph with the hoodies on is meant to connotate the rebellious and naughty side of them both and the last photograph is meant to connotate the sisterhood, as Sweet and Sour are sisters.

The Quotation
In all magazines a quotation from the interview is made bigger. I used a quotation of my interview “Class it as what you like” is meant to connotate that the band is very carefree, young, and individual. It is a quote from Ruth (me). It is meant to make the band seem young and they don’t seem to give a damn what people think of their music just like real rock bands are.

The Interview
The interview takes up the whole right hand page. The questions and answers are in different colors so they can be noticed. The way Sweet and Sour answer the questions and argue shows they are sisters and have their own individual opinions. The banter connotates that the band is funny and that they want to make the reader laugh. The interview is meant to justice the band, as the band wants their music bought; want their music to be listened to and their gigs to be seen. The interview also gave an idea of what the band is like.

All magazines have to have conventions for the magazines to work because magazines are a media product. They have to challenge each other and be individual from other magazines for them to be bought,

2) How does my media product represent particular social groups?
My music magazine is meant to represent the social group who like rock music, who are rebellious and individuals, who have opinions and speak their minds. My magazine had to represent these qualities of this particular social group and I had to think through carefully how I would do this.
Colors
I had to think of colors which this social group would associate with the music genre of rock. I thought about it and came to the decision that the main color which connotates rock music is Black. So I used a lot of Black in my magazine. I did not want to use too many bright colors as this is a rock magazine, and the music genre of rock is dark. The main colors I used were Black, Maroon, White, Grey, Red, Yellow ,Purple and Blue.
Black connotates the rock bands which are in the magazine.
Maroon is associated with the actual object of rock.
White is a color which stands out and is bright and catches the eye.
Grey connotates rock music and makes colors like red stand out.
Red connotates and emergency and something to be alert of. It catches the readers attention and makes them aware of the band.
Yellow connotates danger, This magazine is full of rock music and dangerous!
Purple is meant to be a girly colour and was used on the Sweet and Sour Double Page Spread; this was meant to connotate the girly side of
the band.
Blue is meant to highlight the different people in Sweet and Sour on the double page spread.

Clothes

I tried to ensure that all the photographs I took represented my social group, I wanted to show what the bands were like and how they wore the sort of clothes which my target audience wears. Each band wore dark colors dark colors are associated with rock music. Dark colors also connotate the rebellious side of people. I wanted the clothes to look scruffy as well because people are meant to seem care free in this magazine like they don’t care what people think of them and they are themselves they are not going to change their looks or clothes to please people.
Interviews
The interviews represent the bands, but the bands are meant to represent the people, so the bands in the interview needed to sound like the social group who would read the article. The language needed to be appropriate for the audience.

3)What kind of media institution might distribute my media product and why?
The institution I would choose to publish my music magazine is Emap. I did research into Emap and Emap is one of the most popular publishing companies around. They publish all sorts of popular music magazines such as Kerrang! Kerrang! is a popular music magazine and so it would be appropriate for another music magazine which is up and coming to be published by a well known publishing company. Emap publishes for both males and females and seem to please the audience they are publishing for.

4) Who would be the audience for my media product?
The audience for my rock music magazine NRM is an audience aged 15-25 years old but also an audience who is into the music genre of rock and likes to know about new and fresh rock bands coming out today. I wanted to aim my music magazine at people who were carefree, who had an interest in rock music, who liked to be entertained, who were opinionated and individuals, as I wanted my magazine to be talked about and create opinions, but I wanted my magazine to be carefree without any depressing stories from the world around us. My rock music magazine is meant to have an impact on musicians live and give them inspiration to what to write about for their music such as life events are anything in general.

5) How did you attract/address your audience?
I tried to think of different ways to attract and address my audience, I had to, however, remember that this is a rock magazine for young people aged 15-25 years old. I first thought of what young people are attracted to, which is related to rock music. I looked at the rock music magazines Kerrang! and NME and studied how they attracted and addressed their audiences. One of the ways that they advertise their magazine is by giving subscription forms for so many magazines a month. I noticed that Kerrang! advertise on their own radio station that Kerrang magazine is out weekly. Kerrang! also have a music channel which is dedicated purely to rock and heavy metal music and again they advertise the weekly magazine during the adverts. NME is similar to Kerrang! because NME advertise subscriptions in their magazines, and they also advertise on their radio station that NME is out weekly. Again like Kerrang! they have a music channel dedicated to indie music. Again they advertise their magazine on the NME music channel.
So if I was to think of a way to attract the audience I would advertise on local radio stations such as Viking and Galaxy as these are listened to, and also I would try to advertise my magazine NRM on Kerrang! music channel as this is a well watched rock music channel. But also I had to think about the magazine itself, such as the photographs I used, what the bands would wear, what colors I should use on the magazine which would connotate rock, I had to think about the bands interview, how they banter, the sort of language they use. I had to think of the font styles that I would use which would relate to the magazine. I addressed my audience by choosing out of the photographs which is the most appropriate for the magazine. I looked at the clothes my social group wear because if the bands wore trendy clothes which were similar to the target audience then the audience would follow their trends. I tried to interview bands which my social groups would relate to and I had to ensure that the music I wrote about the audience could relate to.

6) What you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the product?
I learnt how to use computer programmes such as Adobe Photoshop, Fireworks and Microsoft Publisher, but I did not necessarily use all the creations I made on these computer programmes. I learnt about the publishing companies but I did not learn much about the actual publishing factories. I learnt about the actual ideas behind the magazines and also I learnt how to use http://www.blogger.com/.

7) Looking back at the preliminary task, what do I feel I have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
For the preliminary task I had to design a college magazine which I called CLASH! I had to think about the connotation and denotation of the magazine. I had to apply the model LIIAR to it to help me create the college magazine. I learnt about the different camera angles used in photographs as I had to take my own photographs for the magazines I created. I had to learn to use new software which I had never used before, however, I have used Microsoft Publisher a lot for past projects.
When it came to the creation of my music magazine NRM I had a lot to think about and I learnt more about how to draft the design in and plan out the text I would include. I also learnt during the making of my music magazine how to download fonts from font sites. This has meant that my computer has up to date fonts which I can use in the future on other media products. I also learnt how to direct my photographs for the music magazine, how the model should pose, how their facial expressions should be. But what i have benefited the most from this project is learning the keywords to do with media conventions.

I have enjoyed designing the music magazine NRM because I have been able to work on my own project and producing work that I can be proud of.

My Final Design of My Double Page Spread

Evaluation of My Double Page Spread for NRM Magazine.

For the preliminary task I had to design a music magazine. I had to design a Front Cover, a Contents Page and a Double Page Spread. I designed my Double Page Spread on Microsoft Publisher.

I gained inspiration and ideas for my Double Page Spread I looked at two different double page spreads fro two different rock magazines, Kerrang! and NME. I noticed that the double page spreads in both these magazines only use at the most two colors. In the Kerrang! magazine only one color was used which was Maroon. In the NME magazine two colors were used which was Black and White. The double page spreads used colors which connotates rock music. The layouts on both double page spreads were simple. There were only a few photographs used on these double page spreads, so from looking at the features of these double page spreads I had an idea of what my Double Page Spread should look like. But I did not copy the layouts, the colors or the photograph. I made the double page spread was my own work.

The Double Page Spread denotates an interview with the band Sweet and Sour. At the top of the page which stretches right across the two pages is the headline Sweet and Sour. The font style Vts Revolt. I downloaded the font style off a website:

www.dafont.com

The headline Sweet and Sour is the largest words on the page as I wanted the headline to stand out to the readers eye and to get them to read the article. The background is a plain Black.

On the left hand side of the double page spread there are three photographs of Sweet and Sour, I took the photographs myself, I put my camera on a self timer.

The first photograph is overlapped by the headline. The second photograph which is off the front cover is the smallest and takes up the least space. At the bottom of the page is the largest photograph of Sweet and Sour. Across the photograph is a quotation from the interview with Sweet and Sour “Class it as what you like.” The quotation I designed on Word Art. I outlined each of the letters in Blue to make them stand out. Underneath the quotation is the introduction to the interview. The first letter “W” is in Blue so it stands out from the rest of the words to the introduction. The actual Interview is on the right hand page of the Double Page Spread. The interview is set out in columns like on a traditional interview. The questions are in lighter purple and in bold, and the answers are in white. To be able to tell who is talking I put the names “Ruth and Hannah” in purple and bold. I used the plain font Arial which is the most readable.

The Double Page Spread connotates rock music. I used a range of techniques to connotate rock music.

The very first thing I did was think of colors which connotate rock music. I knew that dark colors connotate rock music. So I decided upon using dark colors such as Blacks, Purples, Blues, White and Grey. I made the decision to make the background of this interview a plain Black. It mentions in the interview the genre of the music which is Rock, and Black is associated with rock music.

The font I thought through extremely carefully as plain fonts on Double Page Spreads can be boring. I wanted my fonts to be exciting and different. The headline needed to be a font which is different and individual and which also connotates rock music. I looked through a range of fonts and came to the decision that the font style Vts Revolt connotates rock music and looked individual because after looking at double page spreads such as the one in NME they used a different font style to make it look individual. The font style I used stood out from the page and suited the style of my layout. The rest of the fonts such as the font used in my interview is plain because the font needed to be readable. But I still did think about the dark colors.

The Photographs

The three photographs I decided to use on my Double Page Spread I took myself. I tried to make them look like snapshots I had taken because I wanted my double Page Spread to look individual and the photographs were meant to show the different looks of Sweet and Sour and how they have different styles. For the photographs I had to think through the mise-en-scene, the lighting, the poses, the clothing and the setting.

ne of use is making eye contact with the camera. On the other hand, one of my eyes is cove

Photograph number one

The very first photograph was edited on photo Manger the photograph is not in its original color. The fluffy fairy lights frame the photograph

The only lighting in that picture is the fluffy fairy lights which frame the photographs. This is meant to connotate that Sweet and Sour have a girly side. The photograph looks natural, but well thought through. The light from the fluffy fairy lights shine onto Hannah’s right cheek and onto her hair and onto the whole of her face, and you can see she is looking straight at the reader, and enhances the smile. The light from the fluffy fairy lights mainly shines onto my hair and the right side of my face, the rest of my face is in the shadow. It shows that I am smiling and that i am also making eye contact with the reader. My facial features are enhanced by the limited light.

Hannah is staring at the camera, making eye contact with the reader and pulls the readers eye in. A smile can be seen on her face which looks a bit cheeky. She looks relaxed and has her shoulders relaxed. She has the light wrapped around her so she is framed by the lights. I have my head on her shoulder, my face is slightly covered by her hair. I am smiling and you can see from the limited light the facial features and how they are shaped. The pose makes us look united, sweet and innocent and that we are close as sisters even if we are opposites, she can be sour and I can be sweet.

Unfortunately you cannot really see what we are wearing. But our hairstyles are similar. I looked at the way artists and bands in Kerrang! and NME style their hair, and it seems a lot of the time it covers part of their face. Hannah’s hair frames her face nicely; again part of her fringe coves her face but not her eyes, as I want to see that at least one eye can be seen. My eyes are hidden by my fringe, but you can see that I am making eye contact with the camera.

The photograph is set in a dark room as I wanted the room to be dark and there to be limited light as this is meant to be a photograph which looks natural and I didn’t want too much light in the photograph.

Photograph Number 2

I took the photograph with my digital camera, I put the digital on a self timer and put it on a shelf. It is a picture of me and my sister.

We are both stood in front of the camera looking straight at the camera, as if we are looking at the reader making eye contact as if to say buy this magazine. I am on the right and I am looking straight at the camera and is pulling a small cheeky smile, and I have my head buried into hers but I am not really striking a proper pose unlike my sister Hannah on the left. Hannah on the left is staring straight at the camera, and has her fingers in front of her eyes, and is pulling a pout at the reader. She has her head slanted to the side.

From looking at other photographs on rock magazines such as Kerrang! The hairstyles on the artists a lot of the time is the same. They all have their hair cover their eyes a bit. Hannah has her fringe framed around her face and nearly covers her eyes but you can see both her deep blue eyes which are meant to hypnotize the reader. She has Black make-up which makes her eyes stand out more. She is wearing a Grey hoodie which makes her pale skin and Blonde hair stand out. She has her hood up which frames her face. I have my fringe over one of my eyes, so you can only see one of my eyes, and also my head is slanted so this just flattens my hair. You can see one of my eyes through my fringe which is staring up at the reader. I am not wearing as much dark make-up as Hannah. My hair frames my face and makes my facial features stand out. I am also wearing a Grey hoodie to match my sisters as I wanted to wear something which is matching.

The light came from a lamp which I situated at the back of us. This did cast a slight shadow over us. The light did bounce off my hair which made my sisters hair look blonder.

Photograph Number Three

The third photograph is again of Sweet and Sour. I had to think about the mise-en-scene for the photograph.

The lighting is natural and is coming from the sunshine which is shining into the room. The light shines on the both of us. The sunlight shines onto Hannah’s hair which enhances the color of her blonde hair. The sunshine shines right onto her pale skin which enhances the facial features, and lights shine onto her lips which makes them look very pink. The sunlight also shines onto me but not as much on my hair. But the sunlight does enhance my facial features and what clothes I am wearing.

I wanted the pose to represent Sweet and Sour. So I directed my sister and said how she had to look sour and how she should stand. As you can see in the photograph she is not smiling and looks very sour. Her head is tilted down and this enhances the sourness. On the other hand, I look the complete opposite. I look cheeky and sweet because of the sweet smile. I look slightly evil because of the way I am looking at the camera. I have my head buried into Hannah to show again how close we are.

You cannot see Hannah’s clothes but her hair frames her face. It enhances the pose. You can see I am wearing a Black Top. After looking at photographs in Kerrang! and NME I noticed that a lot of the bands or solo artists had their fringe over their eyes. My fringe covers my eye and enhances the smile. You can see I am looking at the camera but unfortunately, I look evil.

The Actual Interview

I tried to ensure the interview was like an interview which is done with an actual real band. I looked at interviews and had a look at the questions asked by journalists and then tried to use those ideas on my interview, however, I did not copy anything. I wanted the interview to be laid back, and the language used by Sweet and Sour to seem young. I also tried to banter a bit this makes it more entertaining for the reader because this just shows how Sweet and Sour are opposites. But I try to get as much information across as possible about the band. By giving more information it allows the reader to know more about the band and more about the music they play, meaning their albums will be bought and their gigs will be seen.

Draft of Double Page Spread for NRM

This is a plan of my double page spread. I designed it on Microsoft Publisher. I have only done one draft because I knew exactly what i wanted my double page to be like. I just did a basic layout on my draft double page spread. But i was not sure of what font styles to use.

Plan of Interview with Sweet and Sour

Interview with Sweet and Sour

So why did you call yourselves Sweet and Sour?

Hannah: Well there are quite a few erm…. How do we put it…?

Ruth: Rude

Hannah: Basically we cause so much trouble, but yet our parents think we are so sweet and innocent. We basically cause trouble with boys and parties basically we are typical teenage girls who like to have a good time.

I can tell you are not sweet and innocent! But how did you get your music noticed?

Ruth: We got our music noticed in myspace like all the bands around today. But then we started to play at more and more events and did our own gigs and luckily we were spotted.

Hannah: It was probably because we looked sweet and innocent.

Whatever you say. So can you tell me who is Sweet and who is Sour?

Ruth: Well everyone we meet seems to think I am the sweet one because I always pull a sweet face but little do they know what I am really like.

Hannah: Well I am not sour I am just not innocent I cause a lot of trouble but sour seems to suit me. To be honest I don’t care it is only a name.

When are you planning to do more gigs?

Hannah: Well you should write these down and publish these in your gig section. Glasgow March 10th, March 11th Glasgow University and March 12th Liverpool University and Hull University there are more coming up but they are unconfirmed.

Ruth: That’s Hannah and me for you we have memories of Goldfish. But the dates we have given publish!

Do you want to work with any bands in the future?

Hannah: I have to say My Chemical Romance or Limp Bizkit.

Ruth: I have to say Linkin Park or The Prodigy.

What genre of music would you class your music as?

Hannah: I would class it as rock, because of the sounds used and the meanings behind the songs.

Ruth: Well we are individuals so I wouldn’t class it as anything but class it as what you like.

Ok then. So when is the album being released?

Ruth: Not sure yet we want to get more of our music heard but it will be during this year depending when we both feel right. We will know and when we know our fans will know. Our fans should watch out on myspace we will be sending bulletins out.

Analysis of my Final Contents Page

This is my final design of what the layout of the contents page will look like. Earlier on in my blog I published several layouts, in which I showed where each picture was going to be positioned and where the writing was going to go. On the final version I showed the actual design. I designed my final design on Microsoft Publisher, and used the tools on this particular programme to create my Contents Page.

Denotation

The denotation is what is shown on the contents page. Again the word Contents is on the left hand side of the page. The word Contents is in bright Yellow and is in a box which is outlined in purple. Underneath the word Contents is the caption “Rock news. Rock the World. Rock music is not a hobby its life.” This is just something to symbolize the contents of NRM. Under the caption is the picture of the band Sweet and Sour who are being interviewed for the Double page spread. On the photograph is the name of the band Sweet and Sour and a caption on the photograph saying “Sweet and Sour-They are not as sweet as they seem!” this caption is in red. Next to the caption on the photograph is the page number 20 which is in Red, and has been put in a square box to stand out, the box has also been outlined. The square box is Grey which allows the page number to stand out. Under the picture of Sweet and Sour is the picture of the band The Nutters. The photograph has the page number which is again in Red and is in a Grey box to allow it to stand out, and also on the photograph is the name of the band “The Nutters” in red. Underneath is the photograph of The Hoodies. The photograph of The Hoodies has the page number on the photograph which is again in Red and in a Grey box, and the name “The Hoodies” in red which is again on the photograph. The next picture is of the Sister Act. Again there is the page number in red and the name of the band on the photograph. Also on the right hand side, we have at the top the Editors note, which just gives a brief incite into the magazine. Underneath is the section called “This Week”. The title of this section “This Week” is in Red Font which is readable, and has been put in a Black Rectangular box to stand out and the box has been outlined in Grey. Under the title “This Week” is the name of the first section News which is in Grey and White. Under News is what the News contains, which is an article about Bullet for my Valentine, with the page number next to it in the font color purple. We then go onto the right hand side of the bottom of the page which has the rest of This Week section, we have the Gigs section and under the Gig section it gives a bit of information on what the Gigs section has on offer which is information on gigs around today. Underneath Gigs is the Album Review section which is again in Grey and White, under the sub-heading Album Reviews is what this section is about which is the albums out today. Again the page numbers are in Purple.

Connotation

The Text

I designed the word Contents on Word Art, and decided upon the font style of Lifecraft I then put the word Contents in Bold Yellow, as I wanted this to stand out to the eye. As the background is Black which connotates dark rock music and heavy metal I had to ensure that all the text stood out. I have looked at the different Rock Magazines which are around today, and rock magazines such as Kerrang! Use bright colors on dark backgrounds, so I tried to achieve the same. I put the Yellow Bold word Contents on a Black Rectangular box which allowed the word Contents to stand out to the eye. This is the biggest word on the page because I want the reader to know what this particular page is going to be about. Underneath the Bold Yellow text is smaller white writing in the text style of Arial, this is not as important as the word Contents. Underneath is the strapline "Rock News.Rock the World. Rock is not a hobby it's life!"The editor note is still not that important, and is the smallest text on the page as it is not important and is just an extra on the page. It is in white writing so it stands out from the page. Also there is the editor’s note which is on the right hand side this is in a white font as it is not as important, but is in white so it stands out from the black background

On the first photograph of the band Sweet and Sour there is a caption saying “Sweet and Sour-They are as sweet as they seem” this is in Red and in the font style of Tahoma small Cap. Red is meant to connotate alertness, as people should be alert of this new and upcoming band. The caption on the photograph is meant to make the audience wonder what the article is going to be about, and is meant to make them flick to that particular page and read the double page spread, it is basically there to draw the readers eye in.

The Page numbers I created on Word Art in the font style of Haettenschweiler, I put the page numbers in bright red so it is easier for the audience to find the article easier. But also red makes the reader alert of the bands. There is a Grey background for each of the page numbers so they stood out.

The band names are in Tahoma Small Cap and are in the color red so they stand out to the eye. But again I did not want the band names to take over the page but I did want them to stand out from the Black Background.

The “This Week Section” is in Bright Red Font and again I put it in a Black Rectangular Box so the words “This Week” would stand out, and the audience would look at the section and read what else is on offer, and again the red is meant to connotate that they should be alert that this magazine offers a lot other then just interviews with different bands.

The Photographs

Sweet and Sour

I took this photograph with my digital Camera, I put the digital camera on a self timer. I found a suitable setting with suitable lighting. I thought through the pose, our clothing, the lighting our facial expressions.

The Pose

My sister Hannah is on the right, and I am on the left. My sister is doing what is known as the Myspace Pose. This has relevance to what the article is about. She is meant to be pulling a sour face, the pose is meant to be amusing and is meant to make the reader smile. On the other hand, I am smiling sweetly at the camera, this represents Sweet and Sour because my sister is pulling the Sour face and I am pulling a sweet and innocent face at the reader as if I am smiling at them.

The Clothing

We are both wearing matching Grey Hoodies. My sister has her hood up, the Grey hood frames my sisters face, and her blonde hair stands right out. I have my Grey hood down and you can only see half my face, and my cheeky smile I am pulling, my hood does not frame my face.

The Lighting

The lighting is sunlight through the window and light from the lamp I have set up. I put the lamp on a shelf behind us and shone it up at the ceiling which then shone onto us. The light shines on the left hand side of my sister. The sunlight shines on her Blonde hair which enhances it, and then the light shines on her hoodie and hand, and makes our Hoodies very light, which allows the myspace pose my sister is posing stand out from the photograph. My sister’s face is shadowed by her hair, so not much light shines on her face. The light shines on my hair, but my sisters shadow casts over me which makes me look very dark and it can be said a bit evil. The background is Blue, so the Grey Hoodies allow both of us to stand out from the Blue background as I did not want us to blend into the background.

Facial Expression

My sister Hannah is posing with a sour face, but the light shines on her Blue eyes, which shine out to the reader, and is meant to hypnotize the reader into buying the magazine. She is pulling a pout as she is meant to look sour. Her hair covers half her face. After looking at different rock magazines such as Kerrang! the artists or bands hairstyle cover their faces so I tried to achieve that. My hair covers half my face up so only one of my eyes can be seen looking at the reader, my hair frames my face, and my smile is cheeky. My hair covers a bit of Hannah’s face. The facial expressions we make have a huge effect on what the magazines are meant to represent.

The Nutters

This picture is of my friends Junior, Aimee, Stefan, Chris and Alex. They are The Nutters. I took this photograph myself with my digital camera. I thought about the pose, the clothing, the lighting and the facial expressions.

The Pose

This picture is a mixture of planned poses and poses which were accidentally caught. Junior who is on the far left is smiling at the camera, he has his arm around Aimee, who is also smiling at the camera and leaning on Junior. Aimee is very close to Junior and looks very comfortable being in his arms, on the other hand, Stefan and Chris in the middle are pulling their tongues out at Aimee and Junior, so they look unaware that their picture is being took. Chris has his left leg bent and covers part of Alex’s leg. Alex on the far right has just got his head on Chris and you cannot see if he is looking at the camera or not. They all looked relaxed around each other and laid back, the poses look very natural.

The Clothing

Each individual person is wearing what clothes they like. Junior on the far right, has glasses on and his huge leather trench coat on and Black trousers, he looks very Gothic. Aimee is in a Black jacket, Blue T-shirt and Jeans. She has Blonde Hair which has a Blue streak in, it looks like what a lot of rock stars would wear. Stefan has dark hair and is wearing a Black T-shirt and Plain jeans. Chris is just wearing plain Blue Clothing. He has a Blow up dolphin hammer which is a random prop. In a lot of rock magazines, their are a lot of random props used. Alex is just wearing a Black t-shirt with a Blue top around him. They are all wearing clothing which they are comfortable in, however, the clothing does look like what rock stars would wear.

The Lighting

The only lighting I used in this photograph was from the lamp on the other side of the room. But still the picture looks very dark. The light is reflecting off Junior’s glasses and off Aimee’s Blue Streak in her hair. There is not a lot of light in the picture.

Facial Expressions

Junior is pulling a cheeky smile at the camera, and is staring straight at the camera, he seems completely unaware of his surroundings. He looks like he is smiling at the reader. Aimee has her head slightly turned and she is smiling, she is squinting but her grin takes over and she is smiling at the reader. Stefan is completely unaware of the photograph being taken. He is staring at Aimee and pulling his tongue out, unlike Aimee and Junior, he is not aware of the picture. Chris has one eye turned to the camera, but his face is turned towards Stefan, and Chris also has his tongue stuck out, so Chris seems aware of his picture being taken. Alex looks completely aware but we cannot see what facial expressions he is making.

The Hoodies

I took this photograph of the Hoodies with my digital camera outdoors. Again like the other photographs I thought through the pose, the clothing, the lighting and the facial expressions.

The Pose

I sat on the floor at Hull marina, and instructed my friends to run at the camera and pull the first pose which came into their heads. Jarred who is at the very front with his eyes closed and his mouth open as if screaming at the camera like he is screaming out rock music. After looking at different rock magazines I noticed that a lot of rock bands do scream music, so it appears Jarred is screaming rock music at us. Sophie is looking over Jarred’s shoulder smiling at the camera. Matt who is on the right hand side is just grinning at the camera. The photograph, however, looks very natural and unlike some photographs not set up.

The Clothing

All the people in the picture are wearing dark colors which connotates rock music, because rock music is seen as dark music. Jarred how is at the front has his hood up and is wearing a dark black hoodie. Sophie who is behind is also wearing a dark black hoodie which matches Jarred’s. Both have the hoods up so it frames their face. Matt who is in the background has a plain green jacket on with a T-shirt which has a skull on, and skulls connotates rock which stands out from the black t-shirt.

The Lighting

The lighting is natural lighting. As you can see there is a bit of sky in the background, so the light was from the sun. The light is shining on Jarred Sophie and Matt so the photograph looks very light. The light shines a lot on Matt’s face, more than it does Jarred’s and Sophie’s because they have their hoods up.

The Facial Expressions

Jarred has his mouth wide open as if he is screaming at the camera, this is meant to make the reader laugh. He has his eyes closed so you can’t see what his eyes are doing. Sophie is smiling, and his hoodie frames his face so it stands out. Sophie on the other hand, her hair covers her face so you can only see her grin. Matt’s face is the only person’s face who can be seen properly. He is grinning at the camera and is staring at the reader. He looks like he is just trying to fit into the photograph.

Sister Act

I took this photograph of Sister Act with my digital camera indoors, and changed the colors using Picture Manager. Again like the other photographs I thought through the pose, the clothing, the lighting and the facial expressions.

The Pose

Vicky who is staring up at the reader and is pulling a sweet smile at the reader and looks very relaxed. Alyssa who is on the right is roaring at the camera and making a claw hand as if clawing at the reader. She is glaring up at the reader. This is meant to make the reader smile and want to know more about why Alyssa is making a claw with her hand. Vicky and Alyssa have their heads together.

The Clothing

Vicky is wearing a leather jacket which we associate with rockers. She is wearing a Black and White t-shirt, and we associate dark colous such as black with rock music. Alyssa looks Indie. She has a red ribbon hair band in, however, again she is wearing a Black t-shirt but you cannot tell. Alyssa is wearing Black make-up which a lot of rock stars wear.

The Lighting

Originally when I took the picture, I only used a lamp which shone onto both of them, however, I felt the photograph looked boring. So I put the photograph onto Picture Manager and edited the colors. It now looks as if the light is shining on their faces, which unfortunately makes the facial expressions they are pulling hard to see. The light shines onto Vicky’s and Alyssa’s hair and Vicky’s leather jacket. You can see the light being reflected in Vicky’s and Alyssa’s eyes which make them look haunting. The lighting enhances the claw pose Alyssa is pulling.

Facial Expressions

Their facial expressions are hard to see because of the colors which I have edited, but Vicky’s and Alyssa’s eyes are staring at the reader, and glitter in the light. Vicky looks very sweet whilst she is pulling the smile whilst Alyssa is pulling a wild expression, and her eyes look a bit screwed up.

Design of Contents 3

This is my first Contents Page and the actual design of it, and what the contents page design could look like. I have shown the pictures and the colours I could use for the Contents Page.

Denotation

Denotation is what the Contents page shows, the pictures I used the layout I have used. I designed the Contents Page on Microsoft Office. The background is Plain White. The word which stands out the most is “CONTENTS” which is in bold bright Yellow Capital letters, I designed the word “CONTENTS” on Word Art and put it in the font style Rod.

Under the Contents box is the caption “Rock News. Rock the world. Rock is not a hobby it is life”, this is in Bold Tahoma Small Cap font style and is in larger font. Under the Caption is very first picture of the band which is being interviewed for the Double Page Spread, the band being interviewed is Sweet and Sour on the photograph is the Caption “Sweet and Sour-They are not as Sweet as the seem.” This caption is in the font style of Tahoma Small Cap; it is in capital letters and is Bold and Yellow. Next to the Caption is the page number “20” this is in the font style of Hattenschweiler, and is large, and I designed the number “20” on Microsoft Word Art. I the put the number in a Grey box.  Under the picture of Sweet and Sour is the next picture of the next band called The Nutters on the photograph is the page number “18” this is in bright yellow and is again in the font style of Hattenschweiler and is in large font. I put the number in a Grey square box. Under the photograph is the name of the band The Nutters. Under the photograph is the Editors note.  Editors note. This is in smaller font and is in bold Black I decided to put it in the font style of Tahoma Small Cap.  Down the middle is a line separating the two halves of the page, but on the right hand side is the two photographs. The first is of The Hoodies.  On the photograph is the page number “17” this is again in bright yellow writing which I designed on Microsoft Word Art in the font style of Rod. The final picture is of “Sister Act”. The photograph has the number “16” on in again in bright yellow lettering in the font style of Rod which I then put in a grey box. Under the photograph is the name of the band Sister Act. Going back to the right hand side, under the editor’s note is “THIS WEEK” this is in bold Red Lettering and is in Capital Letter. The words are in a Black rectangular box. Under the title “THIS WEEK” is the sub-heading “NEWS” which is in the font style off Microsoft Word Art. I made a fill effect of Grey and White. It is in Capital letters and is in large font.  Under the sub-heading NEWS is what is in the NEWS section which is a article on Bullet for my Valentine. Under the news section is the next sub-heading is GIGS, there is then information on what the GIGS section is about. Under the Gig section is ALBUM REVIEWS, this is again in capital letters and has the fill effect Grey and White. Under the sib-heading is what this particular section is about. Near each of the sections is the page number in bold purple font.

Connotation

The title Contents

In all rock magazines I have looked at especially Kerrang! The Contents title always stands out. So I decided to ensure my title “CONTENTS” stood out to the audience. The word CONTENTS is in bright yellow this stood out, but I felt it did not stand out enough so I then decided to put it on a Black background which I then felt made the word CONTENTS stand out. I wanted the audience to know what issue number it was and the date of the magazine so I decided to put this information in smaller white font as I wanted it to stand out, however, I did not want it to take up too much space. I have again looked at Kerrang!  I noticed there was an editors note, but the writing for the editors note was too small. So I came to the decision as I want the reader to read the editors note I would make the writing larger and in Black so it would stand out from the plain background.

The Photograph

Sweet and Sour

I took the photograph with my digital camera, I put the digital on a self timer and put it on a shelf. It is a picture of me and my sister.

The Pose

We are both stood in front of the camera looking straight at the camera, as if we are looking at the reader making eye contact as if to say buy this magazine. I am on the right and I am  looking straight at the camera and is pulling a small cheeky smile, and I have my head buried into hers  but I am not really striking a proper pose unlike my sister Hannah on the left. Hannah on the left is staring straight at the camera, and has her fingers in front of her eyes, and is pulling a pout at the reader. She has her head slanted to the side.

The Looks

From looking at other photographs on rock magazines such as Kerrang! The hairstyles on the artists a lot of the time is the same.  They all have their hair cover their eyes a bit. Hannah has her fringe framed around her face and nearly covers her eyes but you can see both her deep blue eyes which are meant to hypnotise the reader.

The Lighting

The light came from a lamp which I situated at the back of us. This did cast a slight shadow over us. The light did bounce off my hair which made my sisters hair look blonder.

The Nutters

I took this photograph with my digital camera. I took the photograph when some of the people on the photograph were unaware and some of the people are aware. I have looked at again some of the past pictures took by NME and Kerrang!  And some of the artists look aware and some unaware.

The Pose

In this photograph the group are sat on a sofa. On the far left is Junior. He looks laid back and very casual with what is going on, he has his arm around Aimee who is just leaning back into his arms smiling a cheeky grin at the camera. Stefan on the other hand, is pulling his tongue out at Aimee and is unaware of the camera, although eh does look relax. Chris who is next to Stefan is looking side ways, he has a blow up dolphin hammer between his leg and looks like he is striking a pose. The last boy on the far right is just leaning on Chris.

The Looks

Junior on the far left is wearing glasses. He has a trench coat which does connotates rock music and Goth music. He is wearing a lot of black clothing which again connotates rock music because Black is seen as a tough colour. He has his hair in an ordinary style. Aimee who is next to Junior is wearing again dark clothing which is associated with dark rock music. I also noticed by looking at magazines such as Kerrang! And noticed a lot of the artists had different colours in their hair. Aimee has a Blue streak in her hair and this made her look similar to other artists looks on Kerrang! She is wearing dark denim drainpipes which are again most of the time associated with rock stars. Stefan is wearing a dark t-shirt and jeans. Chris and Alex looks very casual, however, Chris looks amusing with the blow up dolphin.

The Lighting

The light is coming from a lamp which is beside me, however, it does not shine brightly on the picture.

The Hoodies

I took this photograph whilst I was out. I went to Hull Marina, and crouched down and told my friends to run at the digital camera and make the craziest pose possible, because again I noticed that some poses on magazines such as NME the poses don’t look posed they look natural.

The Pose

The very front  person in this photograph is Jarred, he has his mouth wide open as if he is screaming at the camera, he has his eyes completely shut, as if he is unaware of what he is doing. Sophie who is on the left has her head on Jarred’s shoulder, and is pulling a grin at the camera, however, you cannot see what her eyes are doing. Matt who is on the right Is not really posing he is just smiling at the camera, it is as if he is trying to get into the picture.

The Looks

Jarred is wearing a Black plain hoodie. His hoodie is up and frames his face which makes his face stand out, and the pose he is pulling. Again he is wearing a Black t-shirt and the dark colours he wears we associate with rock stars. Sophie is wearing a matching Black hoodie. She has her hood up but her hair flies in her face so she looks like she is head banging. Matt on the far left is in a plain green jacket, and has a t-shirt on which is Black and has a skull on and you see a lot of rock bands which have skulls on. His hair looks very plain and he has not done anything with it.

The Lighting

The light is coming from the sun in the sky. The sky is Blue and you can only see a few clouds. The light mainly shines onto Sophie’s hair.  The light also shines off Matt’s face but Jarred is in the shadows.

Sister Act

I again took this photograph with my digital camera, I then edited it on Picture manager and looked at the different contrasts, in the end I made the wrong decision so I decided not to use this photograph for the double page spread.

The Pose

Unfortunately you cannot see what face Vicky is pulling on the left. Although, you can see she is staring up at the reader.  She is leaning in towards Alyssa on the right.  Alyssa on the right is pulling a face and is making a claw which hides part of her face. She is leaning in towards Vicky. They have their heads together. Although Vicky does take up part of the photograph.

The Looks

Vicky is wearing a leather jacket, and a Black and White T-shirt again Black connotes rock music. Her hair is natural brown, and this allows her eyes to stand out. Alyssa on the right has a complete different look. Alyssa has a more indie look but she is wearing a lot of Black. Alyssa has jet black hair and she is wearing a red ribbon Alice band which stands out from her hair. Alyssa has black eyes which when looked into hypnotise the reader, this is the main aim of her looking up at the reader, her eyebrows go in as she is pulling a roaring face at the reader.

Lighting

The lighting is coming from a lamp near me, however, by me changing the colours it made it appear that the light was shining on Vicky’s hair, jacket , face, on Alyssa’s face, and hair.
