Main task

Foundation Portfolio
For the foundation portfolio I have to create my own Music Magazine. The Magazine has to have a Frontpage , a Contents Page and a Double Page Spread. All of the magazine will be designed by me. On the task I have to use my own pictures which means I will have to go out and take my own pictures. This is the first main task so I will be looking at the key concepts and using LIIAR to do this. I am basing my magazine upon the idea of the rock music magazine Kerrang!

Language-The language I am going to use on the magazine is going to be fun, light, simple and relating to the genre of music and people who have an interest in the music industry which is around today. The text color and the image depends completely on the genre of music and the audience the music magazine is going to be aimed at. An example is the music magazine Kerrang! Kerrang! is released every Wednesday and the colors used are Blacks, Whites and Grey's to create the music genre of Rock and heavy metal. On the other hand, it can be said that a mix type of music magazine which covers Indie, Heavy metal and Pop would use a range of colors ranging from bright colors to dark colors.

Ideology- The idea behind my music magazine is to entertain and inform the audience I am aiming at about the music world I choose, such as what is going on, events which are being held and the latest interviews with the latest bands. By doing this it will promote the music genre I decide to base my magazine on.

Institution-The institution is the music magazine publisher. Around today there is many different music publishers. I am going to research into the different music companies around and the audience which they cater for.

H Bauer is a British Magazine Publishing Company. The Company was once a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index but is now owned by Apex and Guardian Music Group. H Bauer publishes the popular weekly rock magazine Kerrang! The six music magazines in the H Bauer performance stable is Kerrang! Smash Hits, Q, Mojo, Sneak and Mixmag. All these magazines cover for different ages and different music tastes which the readers have but all have one thing in common which is to entertain to the audience.

IPC Media is the leading Consumer Magazine Publisher. Almost two in every three UK women and over 45% of UK men read an IPC magazine. That's almost 27 million UK adults. IPC offers all magazines for everyone. Some of the best know magazines published by IPC include What’s on TV, Pick me up, Woman, Now Marie Claire, In Style, Nuts and Country Life. They also publish the famous music website NME.

Representation-The magazine is going to be representing people who are into rock and who are people with attitude and who love to know the latest from the rock world.

My Final Design and Evaluation

My Final Design
My Analysis of My College Magazine Clash
This is my college magazine Clash It is a music magazine on the music department and the music world at Wyke College. Clash is a magazine for the students at Wyke Sixth Form College aged 16-20 years old who want to know what is going on at Wyke at this point in time.

Denotation
The Masthead

The Masthead is Clash and is in Red capital Letters outlined by Black. Clash is in bright Red Capital Letters because it needs to stand out from the background picture of Amy, one of the students at Wyke. Unlike magazines I have looked at the Masthead is not covered because it is not a well known magazine as it is only the first issue.

Other Text
The less important text is very small. But the text is readable. There is a strapline under the masthead Clash saying “Wyke's official Magazine”. The caption is in capital White letters and is on a Black background to allow it to be seen and read. Under the strapline is the words “Issue 1 February 2009” this is telling the readers this is the first issue. It is in a plain black font so it stands out from the picture of Amy. In the bottom left hand corner is a Black box which has writing in “Plus! Find out who is introducing the Battle of the Bands!” this is in White Font. The Plus is in capital letters, but the rest of the words are not in capital letters. The Black background allows the words to stand out. On the picture of Amy is the headline “BATTLE OF THE BANDS” This is the same size as the masthead as I want the headline to be noticed. Under the headline in Black smaller font is the words “Let the Battle of the Bands begin” this is in capital letters and stands out of the photograph of Amy. Most of the text is in Black and White as I found these colour stood out the best.

The Main Picture
The photograph is of Amy is not at the music department at Wyke but she still does music events. So I asked her to pose for the picture. She takes up the full page, and is the only picture on the front of the magazine.

Connotation
The Masthead
My college magazine is not well known, so I decided that the masthead would not be covered like other popular magazines today as I wanted my magazine to show the Masthead Clash and for people to remember it. The masthead Clash stands out the most from the magazine, the masthead stands out the most because the audience needs to know the name of the magazine. The photograph of Amy takes over the page but still the Masthead Clash stands out, Amy represents the magazine because she is a student at Wyke and is involved with music events. The masthead is in the basic font of Arial, but it still stands out to the eye. It is emphasized by the color it is in which is red and is outlined by Black.

White Text
There is a lot more white text compared to the Red Masthead. The White font emphasizes the important points of the magazine. For example the headline is in White as this is an article which I want to be read by the audience. I want it to grab the eye of the audience and make them wonder what the article is about. Other White pieces of information are in Black boxes so again they catch the audience’s eye and not blend into the picture.

Black Text
There is only one piece of Black text and that is “Let the Battle of the Bands begin” this is a sub-headline which is giving more information into the article. The only other components Black is used for is the Black boxes, with the white writing in to allow the white writing to be noticed and read into.

The Picture
The photograph is of Amy a student at Wyke College who does a lot of music events out of college. She also fitted into the genre which I am writing about which is rock bands and different bands battling it out in a competition. The camera shot is a Medium-close up because you can see her face and the top half of her body.

The Face
Amy’s eyes are deep Blue, but unfortunately the red eye could not be removed. Her blue eyes stand out because she is wearing dark eye-makeup, it can be said her red hair makes her eyes stand out. They draw the audience in to look at the photograph. The facial features are pronounced due to the color of her skin, she is very pale, which makes her facial expressions stand out.

The Pose
She looks very laid back. She has her shoulders relaxed and is looking straight at the camera and is pulling a smile to show she is comfortable with the camera.

Language
The language is communicated through the photograph and the writing. The photograph shows Amy who does music events, so this photograph represents what the magazine is about which is music. The font is simple and easy to use and there is no complicated words, the only words used are the words to do with the semantic field of music such as Clash because this is a sound from music.

Institution
The College will produce the magazine. And pupils can edit the articles as it will be a team of students who produce the magazine.

Ideology
The idea behind the magazine is to give an insight into the talent which is at Wyke. It is meant to represent the students and their qualities of respect, individual speech and opinion and intelligence as Wyke is full of intelligent people who are talented .

Audience
Clash is aimed at the students at Wyke College. The magazine is meant to inform the students about what is going on at Wyke.

Representation
The magazine is representing all the talented people at Wyke.

Analysis of my Magazine

  • My Analysis of My Magazine-CLASH!
This is the draft version of my College magazine. I have decided to use the music magazine Kerrang! as an idea of what my magazine could be like, however, Kerrang! is only something to base the college music magazine on I will not copy the magazine out I want my magazine to be individual.

Masthead
I used the idea of Kerrang! as a name, however, Kerrang! sounds individual and fun compared to some of the other music magazine. My magazine is also going to have a music feel as it is a music magazine.
I came up with different mastheads for the magazine, so I had a range of choices to what the magazine could be called. I came up with:
Bang! (a lot of adventurous things happen at Wyke)
Clash!(At college cultures clash in a good way we get to learn about each other, but also it represents the sound of a musical instrument makes, but again it sounds individual.)
Ting! (represent the quiet students)
Awesome! (To say how talented the music students are).

But I chose the Masthead “CLASH” as it sounded individual, but also grabbed the eye when written down on paper. I wanted the name to represent the college which is all students are individual but all our cultures do clash in a good way.

The Language
The music magazine “Clash” represents the students at Wyke, how each and everyone us are colorful in our own way, so I am going to make the magazine bright to represent how each of us are different but just as important as each other ranging from friendly, helpful, considerate, straight forward and bubbly all of us are different.
The font is going to be big, however, the main headline is going to be in White as the background I am planning to be dark, so the White Font will stand out. On the front page of the plan of the magazine you can see that the “Battle of the Bands” is going to be bigger then the rest of the text so it can be seen for readers, it is going to be red and white so the readers sees it as one of the first things. The rest of the stories within the magazine which are going to be advertised on the front are going to be in smaller font, but are going to be in Black, and as you can see from the plan are going to be in either boxes or spiky shapes so the reader can also see them.
I am planning to use a mixture of pictures which represent each of the stories, but they are going to be in Colour and Black and White so each stand out in their own way. However, I am going to have a medium close up shot to represent the main story, and to make the story stand out the most.

The Institution
I am producing the magazine for Wyke College students and I have chosen a subject to base this magazine which is music, and to allow students to know about the music events and the actual music department itself.

Ideology
The idea behind my magazine is to show the values of the students at Wyke, this is why the magazine is musical it shows one of the many talents in which the students have. I am going to base the magazine partly on the respect and the students wanting to be high achievers. But also to give the fun aspects I am going to do this thorough the pictures I use and the colours I use.

Audience
The audience I am producing the magazine for is the students of Wyke college, so the pictures are going to represent the musical talents and the students. I am also going to write for the ages 16-19 years old by using language they understand. My magazine is going to be for both genders, as you can tell my magazine will cover a story which is to do with Battle of the Bands something that will interest everyone.

Representation
The magazine is going to be representing the audience aged 16-19 years old. My pictures are going to represent the students, and the article . I will be using pictures which relate to the musical magazine “CLASH”.

Analyzation of Vogue Magazine

Vogue Magazine is a fashion and lifestyle magazine published for female audiences aged 15-24 years old who have an interest in the fashion world. Vogue is published in 18 countries by the publishing company Conde Nast Publishers. Conde Nast Publishers also released other magazines to do with fashion and lifestyle, these included Men’s Vogue in 2005, and Teen Vogue in the US. The present editor of the magazine is Anna Wintour; she took over as editor in 1988.
Denotation
The Masthead
The Masthead is Vogue the letters are in Capitals and in Black. This is so the masthead stands out from the background. The masthead is covered by Kirsten Dunst’s head, which again does show how popular this fashion magazine is that the masthead of the Magazine does not need to be seen and the audience would still know what the magazine was called. Also a Red banners covers the "V" so most of the title is covered by an object.
Other Text
Unlike the masthead, the text on the rest of the front page of Vogue is small. For example the writing in White, this is the sub-heading to a headline, it is brief and gives some detail into what the article is about. The writing is visible from the Blue Background as it needs to be seen. The Black font is the same as the White font, instead it goes down the sides of the magazines, the text is what else is going to be in the magazine. Although, some of the Black text is in Bold to highlight some of the important information which needs to be known. The writing in Red, which is smaller then the masthead “Vogue”, highlights the headlines, and gives a clue to what the article is about.
The Main Picture
The main picture is of Kirsten Dunst who is having an article written about her. She is the only model on the front page and she is posing.
Connotation
The Masthead
Vogue is a popular magazine, a well known magazine in the fashion industry it can afford to have the cover girl covering most of the masthead because it is such a well known brand. On the other hand, the masthead “Vogue” stands out the most, as the name needs to be seen so the audience know what the magazine is called, it still stands out even though the cover girl’s head is over part of the masthead. The cover girl covering part of the title represents Vogue as a whole because she is a famous actress, but she looks like a model. The Masthead is a basic font but still the masthead stands out. Also it is emphasized because it is in Bold Black and it looks larger then all the other text on the magazine cover.
Red Text
There is very little Red Text compared to the Black Text. This is because the Red Text is emphasizing the important articles, also the red stands out, and it could be said it represents red lipstick as make-up is used a lot in the fashion industry. The red is bigger text. The biggest red text is “Brighten up” the magazine editors want the audience to read this particular article, plus the red text catches the eye immediately. “Reese Revealed” is also in Red this is so this particular headline stands out and catches the eye of the reader to get the reader to read into the article.
There is a red box which has a bit of important information and it is in white this allows it to stand out.
Black Text
The Black text is smaller then the Red text, this is less important text and gives a bit more information into what the articles are going to be about. The Black text stands out from the picture as it does need to be seen.
The Picture
The picture is of a famous actress she has Blonde Hair and is wearing the latest fashion dress, a Blue Dress. The camera shot is Medium Close up, so you can see her face and top part of her body.
The Face
Kirsten Dunst’s eyes look a very deep Blue. This is due to the make-up she is wearing; it allows her deep blue eyes to stand out as if she is looking at the reader. They draw the audience’s eye in. Her skin is unusually clear it is very obvious that the picture has been put on Photoshop and changes have been made so she looks like a model. The features are very pronounced due to the fact her skin is tanned. The red lipstick shows the smile, the smile is very pronounced and she is smiling at the camera, it is as if she is shooting a smile to the audience. The lipstick also emphasizes the way she has lines around her lips. The hair goes around her face, which makes the shape of her face more pronounced.
The Pose
She has the typical model pose. Although you can’t see it she will probably have her hand on her hip you can see this by the way her shoulder is shaped. The Blue dress she is wearing is emphasizing the way she has positioned her body. The Blue dress also emphasizes the color of her skin.

Language
The language is communicated through the model, you know immediately know what this magazine is about due to the actress looking like a model. The font is very simple, there is no complicated language used, it is straight to the point. There is not too much information to take in just the basic information you need to know. There is only one main picture, there is no other pictures accept from the model. She takes up nearly the whole page, because of the camera shot being a medium close-up.
Institution
The publishing company Conde Nast Publishers they actually publish the magazine. The editors and journalists actually get the stories and edit them.
Ideology
The ideology of the magazine is to get across the information about the fashion world and giving ideas about fashion for the public and also they do stories on celebrities about their fashion.
Audience
The audience of this magazine is anyone who is into the fashion world and who likes to keep up with the latest fashion.
Representation
The magazine is going to be representing the models in the fashion world. The magazine gets the news across to the public about what is happening in the world of fashion, and also giving ideas on fashion. So this is basically representing the models in the fashion world and all the women who are into the latest fashion.

Analyzation of Closer Magazne

Closer
The second magazine I am going to be analyzing is Closer magazine, a celebrity gossip magazine released weekly to allow women especially aged 15-24 to keep up with the gossip of the celebrity world. The Gossip magazine Closer is published by the publishing company called E-map
Denotation
The front cover denotates the gossip in the Celebrity World.
The background on the front cover is littered with pictures of celebrities, and underneath those particular pictures the background is Pink.
On the front cover the masthead Closer is in White to stand out from the Pink Background. The masthead jumps out at the eye, allowing the audience to immediately notice the title. The masthead is in the biggest font size and stands out from all the other text on the Front cover. It is covered slightly by a headline on the Orange box. but the masthead “Closer” is still visible to the eye.
There is other text on the front cover, which is on the relevant picture. For example there is a picture of Jordan looking drunk, then just at the left hand side of the picture is an orange box with the words “Jordan parties alone after Peter walks out” this text is in Black to allow it to stand out to the eye. On the picture of Jordan there is an arrow which is pointing something out to catch the readers eye and draw the reader in to wonder what this could mean. There are other pictures of celebrities, with text which explains the story behind the published picture. Again at the top of the magazine there is more pictures with more text which is explaining the story behind the published picture. Each picture is raised on a color to allow the picture to stand out from the background, but also to allow it to be established as the front cover of the magazine is littered with different celebrity pictures.
Connotation
The Masthead

The Masthead of the magazine is “Closer”. This is in White which allows the Masthead to stand out from the celebrity pictures. The masthead is covered by an Orange box which has text in. This puts the message across that Closer is such a popular Gossip magazine the masthead can be covered up and women would still know what the masthead of the magazine is. The text stands right out from the magazine to catch the eye of the reader; this is the biggest text on the front cover and stands out from all the other text on the page.
The Pictures
The celebrity pictures look like they have been snapped on a camera then just been put onto the cover without a thought to the layout. The main story about Jordan has the biggest picture to allow this particular story to stand out and grab the reader’s attention. The celebrity pictures have been put on the page in a slap happy manner to give the impression these pictures are hot off the press to create an atmosphere as if this magazine has been created quickly because there are so many stories to cover and cram in. The pictures overlap because there is so much to fit onto one front cover, so many stories to cover in the celebrity world. Each of the pictures have writing on to give an idea of what this celebrity story is about. The text stands out from the picture and does not blend in.
The main picture I am going to go into detail about is the picture of Jordan as this is the biggest picture. Jordan looks very drunk and depressed, the journalist has deliberately caught her in this position of looking drunk, and unaware of her surroundings, because this makes an interesting story to catch a celebrity drunk and out of control. They want to catch her at her worse so they actually have a story. Her eyes are closed because she is that drunk. She is showing a lot of flesh off without realizing; this is not a picture which has been posed for it is a picture which has been took when a celebrity has not been aware.
The Background Colour
The background colour is Pink and this is to show the magazine is very much for young women rather then men.
Language-There is no complicated language, just simple language which goes into the story behind the actual picture. The celebrity pictures give a clue into what the story is going to be about. All the pictures are colored so you can see everything which the celebrity is doing, how they pose and there emotions. The magazine uses brief headlines to give a clue into what the picture is about. There is no proper layout for the pictures they have just been thrown onto the front cover as if they are hot off the press, and the editors have not had time to properly lay out the pictures.
Institution-The institution is journalists from a magazine company, who are putting together stories from the celebrity world into one magazine. The publishing company e-map are publishing this magazine for women in the general public who like to read and know what is going on in the showbiz world.
Ideology- The idea behind this magazine is to get across the values of celebrities across to the public, such as the drunk nights they go on, how they lie and cheat, the real values of a celebrity in a showbiz world and that they are just human and that they all make mistakes.
Audience-The main target audience of the magazine is aimed at is the women who are desperate to keep up with the latest showbiz news, this magazine does not target the male audience.
Representation-The magazine is representing the celebrities which make complete fools of themselves. On the other hand it could be said the magazine is representing all the women who love to know the latest gossip. The pictures on Closer represent the story they are covering within the magazine.

Overall Closer is a magazine which has the main aim to entertain women in the general public. They want to entertain the women with the latest gossip, fashion tips and diets to keep women happy and entertained with the magazine Closer.

Textual Analysis of 3 different magazines

I am going to be analyzing 3 different magazines. These are “Kerrang!” (A Music Magazine). "Closer" (A Gossip Magazine) and "Vogue" (A Fashion Magazine)

Kerrang! Magazine

The first magazine I am going to be analyzing is Kerrang! Kerrang! is a music magazine for an audience who are into the rock music industry, it is aimed at the audience group aged 15-24 years old, however, it is also aimed at anyone who is into the genre of music, rock. The magazine is a weekly magazine which is sold in shops.
Denotation
On this particular cover from 22/10/2008 the cover is very crowded.
Title
On the front page the title is Kerrang! It is in the font color Black and is in Capital letters and is a shattered text to represent the loud sound which is coming out of speakers, the text looks like actual shattered rock, this denotates that the rock magazine rocks so much that it causes the text to brake. Kerrang! is the largest text because it is the masthead of the magazine. The masthead needs to be noticed because it needs to be remembered, this then means readers will buy the magazine.
The masthead stands out from the background which is White, the Black stands out from the white background and emphasizes the masthead of the magazine.
What is unusual is that the hat of one of the band members of ACDC covers the letters “A” and “N” this shows the magazine is so popular some of the letters can be covered, because the covering of the letters represents how well known the magazine is.
Other Text
The other text does not stand out as much as the masthead. Accept one of the names of the articles stands out “ACDC” stands out to show one of the main articles which is in the magazine. ACDC is in Red and White so it stands out from the picture. Underneath is some text saying “The World’s Greatest Rock “N” Roll Band”. This is White so it catches the eye, and stands out from the dark background it is on. The text is at an angle which could represent that the band rock so much.
There is other text which is in a smaller font in Red and White these are giving a clue into what the magazine is going to about. But the text is smaller, because it is one of the smaller articles within the magazine. But again the text is Red and White.
On a Blue Arrow there is the plug which is advertising “Free Posters”, this stands out to show that there is something free with this magazine, the Black text stands out from the Blue Arrow and makes it readable for the audience to spot and buy the magazine for the freebies. There is also a plug at the bottom of the page which mentions all the bands which are in the magazine, this is in the smallest font but still stands out due to the color of the text which is white and is on a Black background with Red edges. The big “PLUS” attracts the audience’s attention because it is in bold and in capitals this catches the eye of the audience and makes the audience more interested in what there is in the magazine. The Red background allows the White writing to stand out.
The Pictures
On the front cover of Kerrang! the pictures are of bands which the magazine has interviewed. The largest picture is of “AC DC” because this is the main article which the magazine is covering. It is a mid-shot where only the top part of the body and face can be seen. The band members are standing in front of the grey background to allow them to stand out. The picture is the biggest so it’s the first picture which catches the audience’s eye, also AC DC have a large fan base so this would catch their fans eye.
The Posters are in a smaller size and you can’t really see them, both posters are again a mid-shot where you can only see the top of the body and the face, they are again in colour which does allow the posters to stand out. There is a smaller picture of one of the band members of Red Hot Chilli Peppers, but this is in Black and White with a Red border, this does not stand out as much as the posters or the main picture. All the pictures have a text which give a clue to what they are about.

The Kerrang! Magazine has a layout which when the eye scans down the page, you can take all the information in at once.

I did some research into the magazine. E-map publishes this music magazine Kerrang! this is described to have attitude. Some of the staff of the magazine includes the editor Paul Brannigan, Daniel Lane (deputy editor), Malcolm Dame a Journalist and a Photographer Scarlet Page.
E-map also released Kerrang! Radio in 2001 which plays the latest rock music, and legends of rock music. In 2001 E-map then launched Kerrang! TV which like the radio station covers the latest music.
Connotation
The Picture
The Main Picture is of ACDC.
The Pose
Both band members look like they are about to jump out of the picture at the viewer. This is to create a sense of excitement and could be said to pull in the reader to read more. The band member on the Left is in a Grey hat and is leaning forward, as if his face is coming out the page, he is gritting his teeth, but in an amusing way to make the audience laugh. The man on the right is stood up straight looking straight forward, but unlike the other band member is standing at the back of the picture as if standing back and letting the man on the left make a fool of himself, the man at the back looks more superior. The man on the right is pulling a slight grin, a cheeky grin to give an impression of a cheeky rock band. His arms are obscured by the guitar the man on the left is holding so it is harder to read his body language. On the other hand, the man on the left looks less serious and is pulling his face; he has hold of the guitar and covers the man’s arms on the right.
The Clothes
Both band members are wearing dark colors which connotates that ACDC is a dark rock band. The background they are stood in front of is Grey so the colors of their clothes stand out. The man on the left is wearing a dark Grey hat which stands out from the picture, it shapes his head well and you can see the expression on his face. The audience can see that the top of the body is in a Black jacket with a White Top and Black tie, this makes him stand out from the background and makes him look menacing. He is holding a guitar which makes him looks powerful. The man on the right is wearing a Light Grey hat which makes the man at the back blend into the light Grey background which covers part of the mast-line Kerrang! He is wearing a Black Vest which emphasizes his arms and makes him look strong and masculine. But again his clothes are obscured by the guitar.
Background
The background is Grey and allows everything to stand out from the magazine all in there own way.

Textual Analysis of Secondary Teachers Magazine

Analysis of the Magazine Secondary Teachers

The magazine I am going to be analyzing is the “Secondary Teachers” magazine. The actual cover stretches from the front page to the back page, which is unusual for a front cover of a magazine.

Denotation
The cover stretches right across to give the impression of a school classroom environment of how the pupils are sat, and how they learn. This is all linked to the question on the cover “Do boys and girls learn differently?” The cover needed to link to the question, so you can see the comparisons going on.

The boy and girl are sat differently, this is to point out one of the differences. In this case the school boy is sat with his arm stretched out in the air, eager to answer a question. It is strange how the arm of the boy covers part of the title; this could mean that the magazine is well known within the education world. The girl sat next to him on the same table, ready to write looks amused at the school boy. This is comparing the two school pupils, on how boys act in the classroom and how girls act in the classroom.

The text is arranged around the picture rather on top of the picture. The reason the text is arranged in this fashion is so the picture is not covered with writing, but the readers eye is drawn in on the picture. On the actual cover, the main text which catches the readers eye is the question “Do boys and Girls learn differently?” On the front page, of the boy it is in Blue, whereas, on the back cover of the picture of the girl it is in Pink. This is to empathize what the main issue is being tackled within the magazine, the picture of the boy and girl represents this question. The question “Do boys and girls learn differently?" is however, on the left hand side of the page, and still does not take the eye off the picture. All the text is around the actual picture. The plugs are at the top, again the text is colored which allows the reader to know what the magazine is going to contain.
There is a picture of a voting pad, which is being invented at the moment, and this is the only picture a part from the big picture of the school boy and girl.
Connotation
The connotation of the magazine is trying to communicate with the reader, that in the classroom the students do learn differently. The picture is trying to relate to the question “Do Boys and Girls learn differently?” The picture shows the main differences between the two school students in the picture. Firstly, there is a boy and a girl, which relates to the question and also gender. It is trying to communicate to the reader that boys and girls do learn differently. The boy is being used to communicate that boys are more used to being active rather than sitting still and writing, and the girl is being used to communicate that girls can sit still and write. That there is the difference how boys and girls learn, and their is a difference in the attention span boys and girls have.
The color Maroon is used, because the students stand out of the background and do not blend in, as we want to be able to see the students and how they are sitting, and what there emotions are. The actors have been used because in society today, particularly in school, there is a mixed cultural society, so on the magazine it will look good if there is a mixed cultural boy, this represents how society is in the real world, it does not matter what color you are or gender, so long as you are working hard that is the main point. But it is also trying to show that mixed cultural children and English children can work together in the classroom. The young girl has been used because she looks young and hard working.

The layout of the magazine is very unusual. The layout is trying to portray a classroom situation, and what it is like in a classroom. Also it is trying to show the difference between genders in the classroom, such as the concentration levels. The boy is sat and looks like he isn’t concentrating, whereas, the girl looks focused, this side by side image shows the comparison between the genders in the classroom. The young boy on the front looks like he is hyperactive and ready to learn, but it does portray that his concentration level is low, whereas, the young girl is looking across to him, as if she is sat near him in the classroom she looks bemused by him, and the actions of waving his hand in the air, as if trying t o get the attention of the reader.

The Language-The visual presentation in this case is the classroom situation in which it seems a table with two school students, each different genders, one representing the boys and the other the girls, this is the only the picture. The desk is littered with books and pens to make the scene look more authentic. There is no other pictures, accept a small picture which illustrates one of the stories in the magazine. The font style is very plain, it is all the same font style throughout. What does differ though is the color and the size. For example the main headline which is being looked into more is the question which is “Do boys and girls learn differently?” The main headline is in the color Blue for the boys and Pink for the girls. All the other text is colored in Black, Red, Maroon or Pink, this is so they can be told that they are different stories from the headline. All the text is positioned around the main picture which stretches from the front page to the back page, but the text on the front is exactly the same as the text on the back, it seems like there are two front covers.

Institution-The magazine is produced for teachers at Secondary schools, the magazines contain articles which interest teachers, issues such as; if boys and girls learn differently. This allows the teachers to gain more knowledge on their students and how their minds work. This particular magazine gives professional advice from doctors, and how to spot dyslexia before it is too late. It also gives generalized information on issues which are going on in the world of education.

Ideology-The magazine is going to be based on the education world, and the values of the magazine such as how teachers can make the education at their school better.

Audience- The main audience of this magazine is aimed for is the world of Secondary School education, so in this case the teachers in Secondary Schools.

Representation-The “Secondary Teachers” magazine is aimed at the teachers at Secondary schools, so the pictures needed to represent the world of secondary school education. The main picture needed to look like a classroom, to give a clue to what the article is going to be about, a boy and girl needed to be in the picture as it was comparing the two different genders. The question asked needed to be related to the actual image.

AS Media Studies-Ruth Skelley

Foundation Portfolio-Preliminary Task

In this exercise I have to look at the media world of Magazines, such as Music, Fashion, and Gossip. I use my research to produce my own Music magazine for Wyke College, it is up to me what I base my magazine, such as Sport, Music, or ICT. I am going create the magazine by using the Key Concepts of Media. LIIAR- Language, Institution, Ideology Audience and Representation.

Language
For the language I am going to be thinking about the type of visual presentation, for example, the font, the font style, the Black and White or Colored Pictures I use, and the Headlines I use. I will also think of the layout how the pictures will be positioned, where the text will be put on the Front page and Contents Page.

Institution
The institution in this case is going to be the actual College. Wyke College. The magazine is going to be produced for the college on a particular subject.

Ideology
The Ideology is the values of the magazine. What I mean by this is what the magazine will involve, as Wyke College Students are Respectful, Equal and achieve to the highest standard I am going to base my magazine on those values.

Audience
The magazine will have an audience to aim for. Also the subjects of the magazine have to be aimed at these students. At Wyke College there is a split between the genders. 55% are girls and 45% are boys, so I will have to think of subjects which both genders can relate to. In this case it is the students at the College. It is aimed at teenagers who are aged 16-19 years old.

Representation
Who the magazine is going to be representing . So the pictures will have to relate to the audience, and must be appropriate.

I am going to be keeping a blog right throughout this whole project, and hope to produce a good quality magazine.
