Design of Contents Draft 2

Contents Page

This is my second Contents Page and this is a draft of what the contents page design could look like. I have shown the pictures and the colors I could use for the Contents Page.

Denotation

Denotation is what the Contents page shows, the pictures I used the layout I have used. I designed the Contents Page on Microsoft Publisher. The background is Plain White. The word which stands out the most is “CONTENTS” which is in bold bright Yellow Capital letters, I designed the word “CONTENTS” on Word Art. I decided on the font style Matisse ITC. I then put the word “CONTENTS” on a Black Rectangular box which I drew then filled in with Black. In the same Black Rectangular box under the word “CONTENTS” is the words “Issue 1 and Cover date 5/2/2009. This is in bold white smaller writing.

Underneath the Contents box is the photograph of the double page spread of Sweet and Sour. On the photograph is the caption “Sweet and Sour-They are not as sweet as they seem”, this is in Yellow Font in the font style of Tahoma small cap. On the photograph is the page number as well, this is in the font style of Matisse ITC, I designed the number on Word Art. I then put the number “20” in a Grey box. Under the photograph of Sweet and Sour is the photograph of “The Nutters”, the photograph just has the number on which again was designed on Microsoft word art and put in the same font style and I then put the number “18” in a Grey box. Under the photograph is the name of the artists being show which is The Nutters the font style is Tahoma small cap and the words are in capital letters. Under the photograph of The Nutters is “The Hoodies” the photograph has again the page number in the font style of Matisse ITC. Under the photograph is the name of the band “The Hoodies” in clear writing. Down the middle of the page is a line which halves the page. At the top of the page on the right hand side is the Editors note. This is in smaller font and is in bold Black I decided to put it in the font style of Tahoma Small Cap. Under the editor’s note is the caption “Rock News. Rock the world. Rock is not a hobby it is life”, this is in Bold Tahoma Small Cap font style and is in larger font. Under the caption is the photograph of Sister Act. The photograph has the number “16” on in again in bright yellow lettering in the font style of Matisse ITC which I then put in a Grey box. Under the photograph is the name of the band Sister Act. Under the final photograph are the words “THIS WEEK” this is in bold Red Lettering and is in Capital Letter. The words are in a Black rectangular box. Under the title “THIS WEEK” is the sub-heading “NEWS” which is in the font style off Microsoft Word Art. I made a fill effect of Grey and White. It is in Capital letters and is in large font. Under the sub-heading NEWS is what is in the NEWS section which is a article on Bullet for my Valentine. Under the news section is the next sub-heading is GIGS, there is then information on what the GIGS section is about. Under the Gig section is ALBUM REVIEWS, this is again in capital letters and has the fill effect Grey and White. Under the sub-heading is what this particular section is about. Near each of the sections is the page number in bold purple font.

Connotation

The title Contents

In all rock magazines I have looked at especially Kerrang! The Contents title always stands out. So I decided to ensure my title “CONTENTS” stood out to the audience. The word CONTENTS is in bright yellow this stood out, but I felt it did not stand out enough so I then decided to put it on a Black background which I then felt made the word CONTENTS stand out. I wanted the audience to know what issue number it was and the date of the magazine so I decided to put this information in smaller white font as I wanted it to stand out, however, I did not want it to take up too much space. I have again looked at Kerrang! I noticed there was an editors note, but the writing for the editors note was too small. So I came to the decision as I want the reader to read the editors note I would make the writing larger and in Black so it would stand out from the plain background.

The Photograph

Sweet and Sour

I took the photograph with my digital camera, I put the digital on a self timer and put it on a shelf. It is a picture of me and my sister.

The Pose

We are both stood in front of the camera looking straight at the camera, as if we are looking at the reader making eye contact as if to say buy this magazine. I am on the right and I am looking straight at the camera and is pulling a small cheeky smile, and I have my head buried into hers but I am not really striking a proper pose unlike my sister Hannah on the left. Hannah on the left is staring straight at the camera, and has her fingers in front of her eyes, and is pulling a pout at the reader. She has her head slanted to the side.

The Looks

From looking at other photographs on rock magazines such as Kerrang! The hairstyles on the artists a lot of the time is the same. They all have their hair cover their eyes a bit. Hannah has her fringe framed around her face and nearly covers her eyes but you can see both her deep blue eyes which are meant to hypnotise the reader. She has Black make-up which makes her eyes stand out more. She is wearing a Grey hoodie which makes her pale skin and Blonde hair stand out. She has her hood up which frames her face. I have my fringe over one of my eyes, so you can only see one of my eyes, and also my head is slanted so this just flattens my hair. You can see one of my eyes through my fringe which is staring up at the reader. I am not wearing as much dark make-up as Hannah. My hair frames my face and makes my facial features stand out. I am also wearing a grey hoodie to match my sisters as I wanted to wear something which is matching.

The Lighting

The light came from a lamp which I situated at the back of us. This did cast a slight shadow over us. The light did bounce off my hair which made my sisters hair look blonder.

The Nutters

I took this photograph with my digital camera. I took the photograph when some of the people on the photograph were unaware and some of the people are aware. I have looked at again some of the past pictures took by NME and Kerrang! And some of the artists look aware and some unaware.

The Pose

In this photograph the group are sat on a sofa. On the far left is Junior. He looks laid back and very casual with what is going on, he has his arm around Aimee who is just leaning back into his arms smiling a cheeky grin at the camera. Stefan on the other hand, is pulling his tongue out at Aimee and is unaware of the camera, although eh does look relax. Chris who is next to Stefan is looking side ways, he has a blow up dolphin hammer between his leg and looks like he is striking a pose. The last boy on the far right is just leaning on Chris.

The Looks

Junior on the far left is wearing glasses. He has a trench coat which does connotates rock music and Goth music. He is wearing a lot of black clothing which again connotates rock music because Black is seen as a tough colour. He has his hair in an ordinary style. Aimee who is next to Junior is wearing again dark clothing which is associated with dark rock music. I also noticed by looking at magazines such as Kerrang! And noticed a lot of the artists had different colours in their hair. Aimee has a Blue streak in her hair and this made her look similar to other artists looks on Kerrang! She is wearing dark denim drainpipes which are again most of the time associated with rock stars. Stefan is wearing a dark t-shirt and jeans. Chris and Alex looks very casual, however, Chris looks amusing with the blow up dolphin.

The Lighting

The light is coming from a lamp which is beside me, however, it does not shine brightly on the picture.

The Hoodies

I took this photograph whilst I was out. I went to Hull Marina, and crouched down and told my friends to run at the digital camera and make the craziest pose possible, because again I noticed that some poses on magazines such as NME the poses don’t look posed they look natural.

The Pose

The very front person in this photograph is Jarred, he has his mouth wide open as if he is screaming at the camera, he has his eyes completely shut, as if he is unaware of what he is doing. Sophie who is on the left has her head on Jarred’s shoulder, and is pulling a grin at the camera, however, you cannot see what her eyes are doing. Matt who is on the right Is not really posing he is just smiling at the camera, it is as if he is trying to get into the picture.

The Looks

Jarred is wearing a Black plain hoodie. His hoodie is up and frames his face which makes his face stand out, and the pose he is pulling. Again he is wearing a Black t-shirt and the dark colours he wears we associate with rock stars. Sophie is wearing a matching Black hoodie. She has her hood up but her hair flies in her face so she looks like she is head banging. Matt on the far left is in a plain green jacket, and has a t-shirt on which is Black and has a skull on and you see a lot of rock bands which have skulls on. His hair looks very plain and he has not done anything with it.

The Lighting

The light is coming from the sun in the sky. The sky is Blue and you can only see a few clouds. The light mainly shines onto Sophie’s hair. The light also shines off Matt’s face but Jarred is in the shadows.

Sister Act

I again took this photograph with my digital camera, I then edited it on Picture manager and looked at the different contrasts, in the end I made the wrong decision so I decided not to use this photograph for the double page spread.

The Pose

Unfortunately you cannot see what face Vicky is pulling on the left. Although, you can see she is staring up at the reader. She is leaning in towards Alyssa on the right. Alyssa on the right is pulling a face and is making a claw which hides part of her face. She is leaning in towards Vicky. They have their heads together. Although Vicky does take up part of the photograph.

The Looks

Vicky is wearing a leather jacket, and a Black and White T-shirt again Black connotes rock music. Her hair is natural brown, and this allows her eyes to stand out. Alyssa on the right has a complete different look. Alyssa has a more indie look but she is wearing a lot of Black. Alyssa has jet black hair and she is wearing a red ribbon Alice band which stands out from her hair. Alyssa has black eyes which when looked into hypnotize the reader, this is the main aim of her looking up at the reader, her eyebrows go in as she is pulling a roaring face at the reader.

Lighting

The lighting is coming from a lamp near me, however, by me changing the colours it made it appear that the light was shining on Vicky’s hair, jacket , face, on Alyssa’s face, and hair.

Design of Contents Draft 1

This is my first Contents Page and the draft design of it, and what the contents page design could look like. I have shown the pictures and the colors I could use for the Contents Page.

Denotation

Denotation is what the Contents page shows, the pictures I used and the layout I have used. I designed the Contents Page on Microsoft Office. The background is Plain White. The word which stands out the most is “CONTENTS” which is in bold bright Yellow Capital letters, I designed the word “CONTENTS” on Word Art. I decided on the font Hattenschweiler. I then put the word “CONTENTS” on a Black Rectangular box which I drew then filled in with Black. In the same Black Rectangular box under the word “CONTENTS” is the words “Issue 1 and Cover date 5/2/2009. This is in bold white smaller writing. Under the Black rectangular box is the Editors note. This is in smaller font and is in bold Black I decided to put it in the font style of Tahoma Small Cap. Next to the Editors Note is the phrase “Rock News. Rock the world. Rock is not a hobby it is life”, this is in Bold Tahoma Small Cap font style and is in larger font. Going back to the left hand side under the Editors note is the very first picture of the band which is being interviewed for the Double Page Spread, the band being interviewed is Sweet and Sour on the photograph is the Caption “Sweet and Sour-They are not as Sweet as the seem.” This caption is in the font style of Tahoma Small Cap, it is in capital letters and is Bold and Yellow/ Next to the Caption is the page number “20” this is in the font style of Hattenschweiler, and is large, and I designed the number “20” on Microsoft Word Art. I the put the number in a Grey box. Under the picture of Sweet and Sour is the next picture of the next band called The Nutters on the photograph is the page number “18” this is in bright yellow and is again in the font style of Hattenschweiler and is in large font. I put the number in a Grey square box. Under the photograph is the name of the band The Nutters. Under the title of the band is the next photograph of the next band which is of The Hoodies. On the photograph is the page number “17” this is again in bright Yellow writing which I designed on Microsoft Word Art in the font style of Hattenschweiler. This is large font size. I again put the number in a square Grey box. Under the photograph is the name of the band “The Hoodies” in clear writing. Down the middle of the page is a line which halves the page. The very last photograph is on right hand side at the top it is a photograph of the “Sister Act”. The photograph has the number “16” on in again in bright yellow lettering in the font style of Hattenschweiler which I then put in a grey box. Under the Gig section is ALBUM REVIEWS, this is again in capital letters and has the fill effect Grey andWhite. Under the sib-heading is what this particular section is about. Near each of the sections is the page number in bold purple font.

Plan of layout Contents 3

This is my third draft of my Contents Page for my Magazine. I designed the layout again on Microsoft Publisher using the tools offered. I have not done the proper design as this is only a draft i have just planned where the different components will go.

Font
I changed my font to Rod. Again I put the Yellow Font onto a Black background so it would stand out to the eye. I sized the word "CONTENTS" at 72.
Again the rest of the text will be Tahoma Small Cap. Most of the text will eb in Black so it stands out.
The Grey box will again contain a number which is in the font style Rod.

Images
I am taking all the images myself, and I will edit them and use them on my Contents page.

Extras
I have moved the layout abaout and changed the layout completely it will be interesting to see which is the best layout.

Plan of the layout of the Contents 2

This is my second draft layout of my Contents Page. Again I designed the Contents Page on Microsoft Publisher . This is my second draft of three. Although both drafts look similar I have completely changed the font of the word "Contents" and the actual layout.

Fonts
The word "Contents" on this layout is in the font style of Matisse ITC. I again sized the word at 72, and kept the color the same and again put the word "Contents" on a Black box to make it stand out to the eye.
Again I have changed the font style of the number to Matisse ITC. But I like the Grey box so I have kept it. The number si in the same dark Yellow so it stands out. But the number will be the smallest text on the page.
Again i have decided on this layout to put all other text is the font style of Tahoma Small Cap.

Images
Again the images are going to be thr images took by me and they will be edited.

Extras
I have kept the subscription advertisement in the same place. But I have moved all the rest of the components which make up the contents page around.

Plan of the layout of the Contents 1

I designed the draft layout of the Contents Page on Microsoft Publisher. This is my first draft, one of three. I used the tools on Microsoft Publisher to design the layout. I have looked at different contents pages in magazines such as NME and Kerrang! and i will use these contents pages as templates, however, I will not copy them.

Fonts
The main word "Contents", on this draft is in in the font style Haettenschweiler. I have sized the word to 72 so it stands out on the page. I put the word "CONTENTS" in a dark yellow as this stands out to the eye. I designed the word "CONTENTS" on Word Art. I drew out a plain Black box to put the word "CONTENTS" on, as the word "Contents" is in a dark yellow i decided to put the word on a dark background to make it stand right out to the eye.
The actual numbers to the pages in the magazine again I designed on Microsoft Publisher. I firstly drew out a dark Grey box and outlined the edge of the rectangular box with Black, this made the box holding the number more visible. Again the number was designed on Microsoft Word Art. I used the font type Haettenschweiler again, and like the title of the page I put it in a dark Yellow. The numbers will not be as big as the rest of the text on the page, in fact it will be the smallest text on the page.
The rest of the text on the page, such as the name of the articles is going to be in the font type Tahoma Small Cap. Th saying " Rock News.Rock the World. Rock music is not a hobby, its life!" is going to also be in the font type Tahoma Small Cap.

Images
The images on the Contents Page are going to be the images took by me. Each of the pictures are going to represent the band and its article. The images are going to be different sizes and I may even edit the pictures.

Extras
I will also give a preview of what posters are in the magazines. After looking in the contents pages of NME and Kerrang! I noticed the contents pages had subscription offers so I will do the same. But I will make the subscription offer look different and individual.

My Final Design of my Front Cover

Analysis Of the Final Front Cover of My Magazine NRM.
Part of the main Foundation Portfolio task is todesign a front cover, a contents page and a double page spread. I made a draft of my Music Magazine on plain A4 and this is my final version of my music magazine.
I used the music magazines Kerrang! and NME as templates, however, I did not copy them I used them for ideas on how the layout of the front cover of my music magazine should look. I have applied the LIIAR model to my magazine.

Denotation
The denotation of the magazine is the Masthead NRM This is in the largest font which was created on Word Art, I used no fill, instead I outlined each of the letters in Dark Grey so they would stand out from the background. I attempted to make the lettering the biggest on the page as the Masthead NRM needed to be noticed by the reader. Each of the letters have what they stand for. For example N=New, R-Rock and M=Music. This is to let the reader know what each of the letters in the masthead stand for. The masthead is an abbreviation.
Other Text
The rest of the text on the page I have tried to put in smaller letting. On the actual main photograph is the words “ROCK ALERT”, the words are on a slant so they are noticed, and are meant to look like they are being shaken like an alarm is ringing. The words “ROCK ALERT” are in bright red. The words “SWEET AND SOUR” are underneath and they are in capital letters and are in the font color dark purple and outlined in Black. In the black and white box is more photographs, these are of other bands, and again there are the name of the bands which I designed in Wordart. Each of the names of the bands is meant to stand out to the eye so the reader will notice the bands. The minor text such as the text in the Black and Grey Rectangular box at the bottom is in smaller white font as this text is not as important but still needs to be read.
The Pictures
On the front cover of my music magazine is the photographs of the bands I have interviewed. The largest photograph on the front cover of the magazine is the band Sweet and Sour because this is the main band being interviewed. The camera angle of the photograph is a two shot but the camera angle could also be a medium-shot where only the top half of the body and the face can be seen. The band is standing in front of a Grey Background to allow them to stand out from the front cover. Although the picture does have text on, down the side of the photograph is the masthead NRM, as NRM is a new magazine the masthead needs to be noticed so it is remembered by the reader. There is also other text on top of the picture including the name of the band which is in large lettering, but I tried to ensure the lettering did not take over the photograph and cover the band. The other photographs I took are smaller because they are other bands and are not part of the main article. The other photographs are in a Black and Grey box, to show they are not as important as the main photograph on the front cover. All the pictures are in color but one which is the “SISTER ACT”, I edited this on Picture manager.

I looked at the different layouts on the rock magazines such as Kerrang! On Kerrang your eye can scan down the page and take all the information in, I wanted my magazine to do that to.

My magazine did this because there is the main picture and your eye can scan down the page and take all the information in, I tried to ensure the layout was not too busy. I wanted every component of the magazine to be noticed and to be read by the reader.
Connotation
The Photograph
I took the photographs myself. The main photograph of the article in the magazine is of me and my sister. I called the picture and the band we are in Sweet and Sour. I put my digital camera on a self timer.
Sweet and Sour
The original picture of Sweet and Sour was in plain color and I felt needed editing to put on the front cover. So I decided to use Adobe Fireworks CS3. I uploaded the picture of Sweet and Sour on Adobe Fireworks CS3 and decided to experiment with the tools. I felt the colors needed changing, but I had to ensure the colors still connotate rock music. So i made the decision to use the colors Black and White, I used a solid fill, however, the texture of the color was Grain. You can still see Sweet and Sour underneath this color.
The Pose
Both of the band members are staring up at the reader. I am on the right, and I am pulling a mischievous smile, however, this is slightly hidden by the colors, and my sister is pulling a pout and striking a whacky pose. The whacky pose is meant to make the photograph a bit amusing as I don’t want my magazine to be taken too seriously. I am on the right and the mischievous smile I am pulling at the reader is meant to catch their eye. The pose my sis is pulling is meant to make the reader smile; she is pulling what we call the myspace pose. She is staring into the reader’s eye to appear cheeky. I have my head lent against hers, although I don’t cover her face are hoodie, I am pulling a mischievous smile at the reader to make them wonder why I am looking mischievous. Neither me nor my sister look serious.
The Clothes
We are both in grey hoodies;however, the grey hoodies are again covered in color even though we are on a grey and black background we still stand out from the background as the hoodies we are wearing are a lighter shade of grey. My sister has her hood up, and this frames her face and defines her facial feature. Her blonde hair stands out even though most of it is covered in black and white in the photograph and again like the hood actual frames her face, and makes the face she is pulling stand out, she is looking up directly at the reader and pulling a pout, this makes her seem a little sour and mischievous. Her face is covered in Black and White but her blue eyes stand out to the readers eye. My hair covers part of my face, as some of the band artists on the magazines such as Kerrang! and NME! do hide part of their face sometimes. Although my hair does frame my face, and my Blue eye stands out to the reader, I am directly making eye contact with the reader.

Language
The visual presentation is me and my sister Hannah a.k.a Sweet and Sour. My sister is on the left, she has her hood up and is pulling the “myspace pose” and I am pulling a mischievous smile to the reader. The poses we are doing are meant to make the reader smile and make them wonder why we would strike poses like that, but the way we are each posing represents “Sweet and Sour”. The Sweet and Sour photograph I edited on Adobe Fireworks CS3, I decided to fill in the faces with black and white, because I noticed on a lot of rock magazines Black and Whites are used and again this connotes rock music. There are other photographs which I took of other bands which are going to be in the magazine. All the pictures are smaller because they are not on the double page spread. The pictures are unique in their own ways, especially the photograph of “SISTER ACT” which I edited on Picture manager, I changed the colors. I cropped all the pictures because I did not want to re-size them and ruin the picture. The pictures are all different components and make up the magazine.
I tried to make the fonts I used similar to music magazines such as Kerrang!, however, I tried to make the font I used different. The biggest font was the masthead and I did not want it blending into the picture, and I did not want it to take over the picture, so I tried to make the masthead NRM by outlining each letter. I tried to make NRM the biggest font on the page, to make it stand out to the reader and make the reader buy it. But it is also important that the masthead is outlined because the name of the magazine needs to be remembered by the reader, so when they go back to a shop they will remember it The lettering is shattered int he masthead because I wanted it to seem that the writing had been shattered by loud music. Other text such as “ROCK ALERT” and “SWEET AND SOUR” are in capital letters and in bright colors so they will be recognized. “ROCK ALERT” is in bright red because it is meant to connotates an alarm, as alarms alert people. “ROCK ALERT” is at a slant as if it is shaking because this rock band needs to be known about. The other text on the other pictures is smaller because the text is on less important pictures, and needs to be noticed because they are new bands, but the smaller text shows that these articles aren’t as important as the “SWEET AND SOUR” article. But again the text on the smaller pictures is in colours which stand out to the eye.

Institution
The magazine is being produced for people who are into the genre of music, although I am aiming the magazine at the age group 15-25 years old. The magazine will interest the readers with the latest news from the rock world, the latest gigs, offers chances for bands to play with other rock bands, and interviews with the latest bands. This allows the readers to know what is going on the rock world. This magazine is meant to entertain the readers. There is also other gossip on inthe latest albums being released.

Ideology
The magazine is going to be based on the rock music world. Some of the values of the magazine are the values of the bands and how good they are.

Audience
The audience I am aiming this magazine at is anyone in the age group of 15-25 who are into the rock music world, however, I am also aiming NRM at anyone who likes to read about rock music.

Representation
My magazine NRM is representing the rock bands, so the photographs I take need to represent the rock bands being shown. Also the magazine is representing the audience by using the bands they like. The main photograph I used needed to represent a rock band which would appeal to the audience, and also needed to represent the rock band itself. I tried to make the image relate to the genre of rock music.
